Nepal is continuing large-scale search and rescue operations after devastating floods and landslides triggered by a glacial collapse on August 26. More than 1,200 people have died, while thousands remain missing, according to recent reports.
Rescue teams are still searching particularly around hydropower tunnels, where people may remain trapped. Teams from India, China and South Korea are also supporting Nepal’s rescue efforts.
At the same time, Nepal has started focusing on relief and rebuilding. Around 20,000 homes need to be rebuilt or replaced, while authorities are working to restore roads, electricity, communication services and basic facilities.
The disaster has caused huge amounts of debris and damaged communities along the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river system. UNDP estimates about 2.2 million tonnes of debris in the areas assessed.
🇳🇵 Nepal Flood-Damaged Roads
Severe floods and landslides have damaged several roads and bridges across Nepal. Some roads have been washed away or covered with mud and debris, making travel and transportation difficult.
The damaged roads are also creating challenges for rescue and relief teams. Authorities are working to clear the debris and restore road connections so that essential supplies and help can reach affected communities.
