Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known engineer, education reformer, and environmental activist from Ladakh, began an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement. The protest started on 28 June 2026 and focuses on issues related to India’s education system and alleged exam paper leaks.
The protesters are demanding strict action against those responsible for paper leaks, greater transparency in competitive examinations, and reforms to ensure a fair education system. They have also called for accountability from the government over the handling of these issues.
After fasting for 21 days, Sonam Wangchuk’s health reportedly deteriorated. On 18 July 2026, he was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital under medical supervision after doctors raised concerns about his condition. Despite being hospitalized, Wangchuk urged supporters to continue the movement peacefully and participate in the planned “Sansad Chalo” march.
Following his hospitalization, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke continued the hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on behalf of the movement. The protest has attracted students, teachers, social activists, and citizens from different parts of the country, making it one of the major public demonstrations on education-related issues this year.
The authorities have increased security in and around Jantar Mantar and other parts of Delhi to maintain law and order as the protest continues. Meanwhile, the movement has sparked nationwide discussions about examination reforms, transparency, and accountability in India’s education system.
